If you transport hazardous materials, don’t forget: the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) requires all hazmat carriers to register annually and pay a fee to legally operate.
- The 2025–2026 registration year runs from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.
- Payment must be received by July 1, 2025 to avoid disruptions.
Make sure you’re up to date — your certificate of registration is required for compliance and inspections.
Who Needs to File a Hazmat Registration?
Any business—interstate or intrastate—that transports hazardous materials requiring a DOT hazmat placard must file an annual registration with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). A valid registration certificate must be kept in your vehicle at all times during transport.
How Much Does Hazmat Registration Cost?
The cost depends on your company’s size, based on a two-tier fee structure:
- Small Businesses pay a reduced fee.
- Large Businesses pay the full amount.
To qualify for the small business fee, your company must meet the Small Business Administration (SBA) size standards.
For most trucking and pipeline companies, that means having:
- Fewer than 1,500 employees, or
- Less than $27.5 million in annual revenue
Not sure if you qualify? You can check SBA size standards here.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
Failing to register or to carry a valid certificate can lead to serious consequences:
- Loss of operating authority (interstate and intrastate)
- Fines up to $37,500 per day if you’re found noncompliant during a roadside inspection
Do You Need to Renew This Year?
